I was planning to call this blog "Not A VC" as a tip of the hat to one of the best early-stage technology blogs out there, Fred Wilson's "A VC". Sign up for it if you don't yet read it! http://www.avc.com/
Well, I'm not a Venture Capitalist like Fred (or like anyone, come to that), hence that working title. For a VC, ultimately, success is measured as a hefty multiple return on their investment, realized via an IPO and subsequent sale of their position or by a sale of the business to an acquirer.
What I do is work with, and for, venture capital-backed companies to help them develop their strategies, raise money, execute on their vision, grow the business and help make it successful.
It's really about helping visionaries - people with great ideas, technology and entrepreneurial spirit - achieve their goals. And along the way make investors, customers, employees and others who have in some way participated successful as well.
I love doing what I do. When things are going well I can't wait to get up in the morning - assuming I've actually gone to bed anyway - and get on with it! When things are not going so well and, yes that does happen, then it's a challenge and experience - but not a loss.
With this blog I hope to provoke some ideas and thoughts, share some insights and give some perspectives for people in the technology start-up and growth space. Maybe scatter a few odds and ends in there too. Fred is very into music and family and talks about them frequently in his blog. My takes may be a bit different but I hope you'll find them fun!
If you like what you read, please let me know. And if you don't, well, isn't the internet a wonderful thing anyway!
Cheers!
Philip
